So many kids have a hard time with reading these days since schools stopped using phonics. Most of the reasons this was don’t had little to to with education and more to do with some romantic ideology associated with so called ‘whole language’ learning – often described as ‘look and guess’! Increasingly, parents are buying use-at-home phonics systems like FatBrain and the incredibly fun Robot Reader system to give their kids the best start in learning.
It is significant, I think, that Montessori methods emphasise phonics. The success they have with even very young children is astounding.
